Relay For Life Followup– Thank You!

When I was 16 years old, my grandmother was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer.  We were enjoying strawberry shortcake for her birthday when she became extremely ill.  Doctors first diagnosed her with the stomach flu, only to discover, with further testing, that she was in the advanced stages of cancer and it was strawberry seeds lodged in one of the polyps causing the initial irritation.

It was my first experience with somebody so close to me suffering from the dreaded “C” word.  My beautiful grandmother fought for another 18 months.  She held on until I graduated from bootcamp so that she could see me in my Coast Guard Blues.

Since my grandmother’s passing 14 years ago, I have lost my grandfather (her husband) to liver cancer, and my other grandfather to kidney cancer.  A few weeks after I met my wife in 2001, her grandmother lost her battle with breast cancer, only to be followed by Tiffani’s uncle to melanoma behind the eye a few short years later. Cancer scares me.

Cancer has touched everyone in some form and Relay For Life is an ongoing community fundraising event to support the American Cancer Society in its fight to end Cancer.  Since my grandmothers battle 14 years ago, not only has our understanding of cancer dramatically improved, but so has the testing, screening, preventative and the follow-up care.  The American Cancer Society has played a major role in this.

I was excited for Relay for Life as a beneficiary and focus of Kettlebells for a Cause. With such amazing members, Team Iron Republic truly rose to the challenge. Members raised money online, filled water bottles, worked out at Kettlebells for a Cause Team Training, baked for the Paleo Bake Sale, dined for the Cause at California Pizza Kitchen, purchased Kettlebell for a Cause T-shirts with a percentage going to charity, and battled wind and cold to walk at the Relay for Life event. And when I say walked… I mean walked for an hour plus straight!

I would like to personally thank all of you for your time and support. Collectively we raised over $2,600 in donations that will help fund the American Cancer Societies efforts in battling this devastating disease.  I cannot be more inspired and proud to be apart of your team. Truly one of many ways you all Live Life Strong – body, mind and soul.

On behalf of my wife and I, thank you again from the bottom of our hearts.
